Toussaint Louverture began his military career as a leader during a slave revolt in the French colony of Saint Domingue also known as the Haitian revolution. Louverture was intitially allied with the Spanish until slavery was abolished and a new independant government was established. The Haitian revolution along with the American revolution were the only two revolutions to achieve permanent independance from European power before the 19th century.
