Latin American scholars, priests, and nationalists learned about the revolutions in America and Europe. These successful revolts inspired many Latin Americans to begin a revolution of their own. Simon Bolivar, Toussaint Louverture, Miguel Hidalgo, Jose de San Martin, are among many nationalist leaders to overthrow European monarchs and establish new governments in South America.
